Real Estate Blogging – How Long Should It Take To Create Content? – Productivity Nugget #136

In my 1-2-1 Business  Development Formula for real estate agents – the first 1, I suggest that you should spend 1 hour a day creating content. This doesn’t always mean real estate blogging.

This could mean creating a landing page for you real estate blog, website.

Or updating your listing conversation or buyer consultation.

Filming and editing a video. There are lots of way just to use video in real estate blogging.

Does that mean it takes 1 hour to write a good real estate blog post?

Not at all.

On my Productivity Junkies Facebook page we are having a discussion about content creation. How long should it take? Can you create a real estate blog post in under an hour that provides value? Is it OK to duplicate content?

Tabitha Zesch wrote,

“A quality post that provides value to the consumer and is interesting to read will take at least an hour to write. Some agents want to do that, but many don’t have the desire or time.”

Dale Chumbley responded by saying,

“How can you decide what provides value to the consumer? How can you say it takes at least an hour to write a post with value? Doesn’t the consumer determine if a post has value or not?

I would argue I’ve been writing one post every single day for almost 4 months and providing huge value to my consumers (the comments, emails and numbers would back up this statement). No post takes me anywhere close to an hour to write. Most people won’t read more than 300-400 words. Add photos, videos (that are short) to engage with your audience.”

You may be both surprised and impressed by the level of conversation, engagement and connections

Mitch Joel writes a blog called six pixels of separation. His blog post Marketing In Twenty Minutes (Or Less) gives the idea of shorten the time you put into your blog post. By keeping it short, you may not finish your thought, but this might allow for more comments and engagement.

So don’t worry about not having enough time for your real estate blogging. If you don’t have an hour, start with 20 minutes or even 15 minutes. Just start.

Here’s the section of the blog post where I ask you to leave a comment. How are you creating content? How long is it taking you to create the content? Please feel free to provide links to your work. This is a great opportunity for some self promotion!

Thanks for the shoutout Darin! Great conversation here. For me, the toughest thing was making my content creation priority. I’ve finally gotten into the mode that it’s a must have in my world. Now there’s no looking back. I allowed myself to be paralyzed for more than two years over thinking and over analyzing the “writing process”. I’m so thankful I’m now creating regular content. I hope all the Productivity Junkies just start doing it too! I promise you won’t be sorry.

[...] “Creating content takes to much time, that is why I don’t blog.” I have set up about a dozen blogs for real estate agents and of those I think 0 are actually still blogging today. That quote is the most common excuse I hear. Personally I don’t think it should take more than 20 minutes at the most to write a blog post, but How Long Should It Take To Create Content? [...]

Terrific post, Darin. Thanks for the reminder that creating content is not exclusively about blogging. In watching your video, I couldn’t help but think it goes without saying that it takes time to create quality content. How much time will depend on the content creator and his or her ability to focus, generate ideas, and edit their own copy. But the real question for me is how to keep the momentum going in the summer, especially with seemingly everyone on vacation, not to mention this heat and humidity! I think you need to do a post about that and soon! ;-)
