“The guy with the most resources doesn’t win. The guy who utilizes his resources best wins.” – Chuck Knight
Have you seen the TV show Hoarders?
It’s kind of sad. It shows people living with the disorder of compulsive hoarding.
Wikipedia defines compulsive hoarding as
the excessive acquisition of possessions (and failure to use or discard them), even if the items are worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary. Compulsive hoarding impairs mobility and interferes with basic activities, including cooking, cleaning, showering, and sleeping.
Technology, Resources & Tools Hoarding
This may be an extreme example, but I’m seeing so many people doing what I’ll call Technology Hoarding.
Always looking for new tools, apps and technology, even if the items are worthless and don’t truly add to productivity. Collecting the resources just say I have them.
How many browsers do you have open on your computer right now. Are you a browser hoarder? Do you really need all these browsers open?
Look at how many apps you have on your phone. Are you an app hoarder? Do you really need all these apps on your phone?
Look at how many emails you have in your inbox. Do you really need all these unread emails sitting there? Why can’t you delete them or archive them?
Technology Hoarding may not be as paralyzing as true compulsive hoarding, but it is certainly a productivity killer.
Stop The Technology Hoarding
My friend Daniel Rothamel wrote a great blog post a couple weeks back telling us to put the tool talk on hold. Daniel wrote in that post,
Without understanding how to use any of the tools, simply knowing that they exist is rather meaningless.
Seems like a symptom of Technology Hoarding. Collecting tools, the knowledge, and info with out having a strategy or a plan to implement its use.
Chris Brogan, author of Trust Agents, wrote a blog post recently also asking Is It Moving You Forward? He sees people getting distracted by tools, resources and technology and says it is probably because,
We do things because we want to stay informed. We do things because we want to stay “in the know.” We worry that we’re going to fall behind if we don’t keep up with every little thing coming along.
Does that sound like you?
Want to stay informed? Stay “in the know?” Afraid to fall behind?
Its almost counter-productive though. That by trying to stay in the know and not fall behind, hoarding all these technologies and tools is actually causing you to fall behind.
Maya Sabot Paveza also wrote a blog post mentioning the two above blog posts. One of my favorite things she wrote was,
If you don’t understand how the tools work, and why you want to work with them, creating a business plan for yourself, you will truly only be wasting your time.
Stop The Innovation
I’m serious. Stop the innovation. Start the implementation.
Now there has to be some balance here. If you are not online using inbound marketing or have a wordpress website you need to get in this space. You are the opposite of the Technology Hoarder. Instead of a compulsive hoarder that collects every piece of junk that clutters a room, you don’t have anything in your room. Not even furniture. That doesn’t work either.
There needs to be balance for true productivity.
If you are a feeling like you might be a Technology or Tool Hoarder, get back to implementation. Stop trying to be so innovative and look at how you can start using what you already know and have to implement into your current strategy, to help you accomplish the goals on your Simple One Page Business Plan.
For many of us, more resources, more tools and more technology are not the answer. They are just a distraction. A shot of dopamine to give us a short term high, until we need some more and we are off looking for another new tool, app or technology.

“Have I told you lately that you’re the greatest thing since sliced cheese? And that at least every other day Matt and I tell each other out loud about how grateful we are to have found you?
You’re a true blessing and are helping us like no other coach to make impactful changes within our business, at a pace that makes sense. And you ‘GET’ technology, too! Coach D, you’re a dream come true. “

"We closed 80 transactions in 2009, started coaching with Darin in 2010, and ended the year with 124 closed transactions." - Incorvaia Team
I wanted to start to build a team and with Darin's coaching I have added 2 full
time buyers agents and a virtual assistant. We are getting so organized
and now I am able to prospect for listings like I should have been doing
before.
Darin is a KICK ASS coach, motivator and a genius. Yes, he has a mind that is incredible.
I feel that Darin is vested in my success both personally and professionally. He is a dear friend and I am excited we are now partners.
- Lisa Archer
"Of the 20 years I've spent in real estate, I've never received the type of training and coaching that truly engages my clients in the way that creates results I was looking for. Darin's strategies are simple, powerful, inexpensive & most of all, productive beyond my expectations." - Stacey McVey

"I have been working with Darin for 10 weeks now, I was looking for a way to take my business to another level going into my second full year of real estate. I closed 32 deals in 2011 and so far with the help, guidance and motivation I am on pace to double my transactions in 2012. The most exciting part about working with Darin is I am able to increase my production without adding hours to my week, Darin has taught me how to leverage my time and use it more efficiently. If you are serious about taking your real estate career to a new level, it is a MUST to start working with Darin Persinger as soon as you possibly can." - Ryan Shields
I am the owner of a very young company that was growing faster than I was ready for. I had a head FULL of wonderful ideas and I had a vision. I found myself not being able to accomplish many of my goals, due to the lack of focus. I was jumping from one project to another, while completing none of them. I WAS the shiny object chaser. Thanks to Darin, I don't see shiny objects any longer...I have my eye on the one thing that counts...what works for me and what is best for MY company.
I made the commitment to coaching the moment I knew I could trust Darin. I felt like I needed someone that had been in the trenches and continued to educate themselves. I found all of that in Darin. - Elizabeth Cooper-Golden
"Levels is working great! It's really helping me stay very organized and scheduled. I just listed a house today, I'm doing another listing presentation tomorrow, I did showings Sunday and last night. I should be listing another property this week and a possible offer on a property." - Sonia Lyonnais
"In only 8 weeks, I've increased my bottom line by 27%." - Jonathan Rivera aka Real-Tech Guy of Official Real Estate Referral Group
"When this program had started, I had only 4 deals closed for the entire year. Since starting in Levels, I have added 3 listings, wrote 7 offers and will have closed 3 deals." - Rich Ganim
