More Resources And More Tools Are NOT The Answer

“The guy with the most resources doesn’t win. The guy who utilizes his resources best wins.” – Chuck Knight

Collecting too much stuff you can't use?

Have you seen the TV show Hoarders?

It’s kind of sad. It shows people living with the disorder of compulsive hoarding.

Wikipedia defines compulsive hoarding as

the excessive acquisition of possessions (and failure to use or discard them), even if the items are worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary. Compulsive hoarding impairs mobility and interferes with basic activities, including cooking, cleaning, showering, and sleeping.

Technology, Resources & Tools Hoarding

This may be an extreme example, but I’m seeing so many people doing what I’ll call Technology Hoarding.

Always looking for new tools, apps and technology, even if the items are worthless and don’t truly add to productivity. Collecting the resources just say I have them.

How many browsers do you have open on your computer right now. Are you a browser hoarder? Do you really need all these browsers open?

Look at how many apps you have on your phone. Are you an app hoarder? Do you really need all these apps on your phone?

Look at how many emails you have in your inbox. Do you really need all these unread emails sitting there? Why can’t you delete them or archive them?

Technology Hoarding may not be as paralyzing as true compulsive hoarding, but it is certainly a productivity killer.

Stop The Technology Hoarding

My friend Daniel Rothamel wrote a great blog post a couple weeks back telling us to put the tool talk on hold. Daniel wrote in that post,

Without understanding how to use any of the tools, simply knowing that they exist is rather meaningless.

Seems like a symptom of Technology Hoarding. Collecting tools, the knowledge, and info with out having a strategy or a plan to implement its use.

Chris Brogan, author of Trust Agents, wrote a blog post recently also asking Is It Moving You Forward? He sees people getting distracted by tools, resources and technology and says it is probably because,

We do things because we want to stay informed. We do things because we want to stay “in the know.” We worry that we’re going to fall behind if we don’t keep up with every little thing coming along.

Does that sound like you?

Want to stay informed? Stay “in the know?” Afraid to fall behind?

Its almost counter-productive though. That by trying to stay in the know and not fall behind, hoarding all these technologies and tools is actually causing you to fall behind.

Maya Sabot Paveza also wrote a blog post mentioning the two above blog posts. One of my favorite things she wrote was,

If you don’t understand how the tools work, and why you want to work with them, creating a business plan for yourself, you will truly only be wasting your time.

Stop The Innovation

I’m serious. Stop the innovation. Start the implementation.

Now there has to be some balance here. If you are not online using inbound marketing or have a wordpress website you need to get in this space. You are the opposite of the Technology Hoarder. Instead of a compulsive hoarder that collects every piece of junk that clutters a room, you don’t have anything in your room. Not even furniture. That doesn’t work either.

There needs to be balance for true productivity.

If you are a feeling like you might be a Technology or Tool Hoarder, get back to implementation. Stop trying to be so innovative and look at how you can start using what you already know and have to implement into your current strategy, to help you accomplish the goals on your Simple One Page Business Plan.

For many of us, more resources, more tools and more technology are not the answer. They are just a distraction. A shot of dopamine to give us a short term high, until we need some more and we are off looking for another new tool, app or technology.
