The first time I met Nate he was quiet. A firm handshake. He looked me in the eye. But quiet. He sat on the side of the desk as I talked with a current client.
I would on occasion make eye contact with him to make sure he was engaged in the conversation and to let him know he was invited to share or question at any time. And I knew he wasn’t staying quiet because of disinterest. He wanted to listen, process and learn. You could see it.
Often he would nod his head in agreement when I shared a thought that resonated him. He stayed quiet though.
Not because he didn’t have anything to share but because he was learning.
Launching A Real Estate Career
Nate is brand new to real estate. He just moved to the Puget Sound recently. Leaving Texas. Leaving a teaching job. He moved here, got married and is launching a new real estate career.
He is serious about real estate and hired me as his real estate sales coach to help him get his business launched.
The second time I met Nate he wasn’t as quiet. We met at a coffee shop on a Saturday morning. The sun was out in the Puget Sound. We sat outside, overlooking the water, we talked about his past. What brought him to now. Why real estate. We had iced coffees and talked about the Mid-west. (I’m from Wisconsin, he’s from Iowa)
We talked about lead generation, social media and technology. We talked about blogging. How to engage and connect in the community. How marketing now is about sharing your daily activity. How being new to the area, he doesn’t have an established sphere, that taking a FlipCam into a local business and talking with the owner or manager would be a great way to meet people…with intent. And how sharing that video back on his website would amplify his message and activity.
Just before he left, I pulled out a portion of my simple one page business plan and walked him through the economic formula. He shared with me what he wanted to accomplish for his first year in the real estate business. He told me. No hesitation. He had clarity. He was surprised at how easy it would be to meet his goals though. He was ecstatic that he knew the numbers now, but understood those numbers where people. So that meant he was really focused on have conversations, connecting and engaging with two new people every week that had a real estate need.
Having those two conversations would help him build the business he desired.
He needed to go plan a wedding though. He was getting married in two weeks.
The Online Website Presence
The third time I met with Nate was at a coffee shop next to his office. We sat in big comfy leather chairs and had another conversation. We talked about his business strategy and the hub of that, his website.
Coaching with me includes a custom designed wordpress website from HomeQuest. It was now time to focus on what that custom design should be.
Who is Nate?
What will be his geographic focus?
What will be his demographic focus?
What will be his daily activity as a real estate agent?
We spent a couple hours brainstorming, discussing and organizing our thoughts. The last saturday discussion came back into play. Now that I knew him much better I could help him direct his ideas. I didn’t have to lead. Nate knows who he is. I just needed to help direct him in how does him, being him, bring him real estate business.
Nate determined that his geographic area was going to be an area along the 405 from the Bothell area to the Kirkland. Inside that geographic area he was going to focus on his demographic as first time home buyers. We knew that the median price in that area is between $300,000 to $600,000.
Not out of reach for a first time home buyer though because many Microsoft, Amazon and Google employees are looking to live in this area. So we know the type of buyer client we would be dealing with. An educated, tech savvy buyer.
So does that mean we geek out and make the website have 1′s and 0′s all over it? (I wonder how many people will get this joke.)
No. We knew that people in this area are actually very active. Walking trails. Biking trails. Hanging out along the Lake Washington waterfront.
We are really starting to get a clear picture now.
I’m new to Puget Sound. Nate is newer to Puget Sound, but there is something we both noticed about people that live in this area. They consider themselves Eastsiders, not Seattleites. They don’t live in Seattle. They live on the Eastside.
So after a couple phone calls to Haley, the Project Manager at HomeQuest, to make sure Nate and I were indeed on the right track we had info to submit for his custom design site.
More than that though. We had started to formulate his business development strategy. We now knew who is audience was. We knew what geographic area he was going to work. We knew what daily activities he would do to engage in that area.
Nate was ready to launch.
We just needed to get him married, off to his honeymoon and get the mock up back from HomeQuest.
Who Is Nate The Real Estate Agent?
I saw the first mock up before Nate. He was away on his honeymoon.
I liked it. I loved what the design team did and how they simplified our pages of notes in to this one beautiful design that will become a container for all of Nate’s content where he will share about real estate and his community.
The next day I was showing someone else, I liked it even more. Later in the week I looked at it again. I liked it EVEN more.
It was subtle. It was powerful.
Nate and I got together yesterday to talk about it. He loves it. It is something that he is truly proud of. Something he wants to show off.
We will be making a few tweaks to it but here is the first mock up of Nate’s, the brand new real estate agent’s website.
Do you have website that represents your audience? Does it reflect you? Does it reflect your daily activity?
Are you proud of it?
Do you want to show it off?

I am the owner of a very young company that was growing faster than I was ready for. I had a head FULL of wonderful ideas and I had a vision. I found myself not being able to accomplish many of my goals, due to the lack of focus. I was jumping from one project to another, while completing none of them. I WAS the shiny object chaser. Thanks to Darin, I don't see shiny objects any longer...I have my eye on the one thing that counts...what works for me and what is best for MY company.
I made the commitment to coaching the moment I knew I could trust Darin. I felt like I needed someone that had been in the trenches and continued to educate themselves. I found all of that in Darin. - Elizabeth Cooper-Golden
